Maniq Hamiq – Us & Them
The story of human kinds shift to agriculture is hardly a new one, the story is very nearly over, but deep in the forests of Southern Thailand the Maniq live out the final chapter.
The Maniq are the last indigenous, nomadic, hunter gatherer tribe in Thailand, debatably in Asia. In contemporary Thai culture they’re seen as little more than a joke, a racist caricature that few know the origins of, today only around 250 remain. Inside a nation governed by rigid hierarchy, the Maniq live within their own internalised society of anarcho-communism, everyone is equal, everything is shared, there is no private property, no debt, no hierarchy.
The Maniq are one of the final chapters of the agricultural revolution.
